Sales Tax Calculator

Fill in any two of the three values — before-tax price, sales tax rate, after-tax price — and the calculator finds the third, along with the exact tax amount. Or pick a state below and its general rate is filled in for you.

The three formulas

Tax = before-tax price × rate
After-tax = before-tax + tax
Before-tax = after-tax ÷ (1 + rate)

Working backwards from a receipt total is the one people get wrong most often: you divide by (1 + rate) — you do not subtract the rate percentage from the total.

Sales Tax Rates by State

The general statewide rate, and the highest combined rate reachable once county, city and district taxes are added. Your actual rate depends on exactly where the purchase happens.

What Is a Sales Tax?

A sales tax is a consumption tax collected by a government on the sale of goods and, in many places, services. The seller normally collects it from the buyer at the moment of purchase and passes it on to the state. Because it is charged only once — on the final retail sale — the businesses that manufactured, shipped and wholesaled the product along the way do not pay it on their own transactions. Most of the rest of the world uses the closely related value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) instead, which is collected in slices at every stage of the supply chain but lands on the same person in the end: the final consumer.

Sales Tax in the United States

There is no federal sales tax in the U.S. Forty-five states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam levy a statewide one; the five exceptions are Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Statewide rates run from 2.9% in Colorado to 7.25% in California and 10.5% in Puerto Rico — and that is only the starting point. Counties, cities and special districts stack their own taxes on top, so the rate that actually applies can reach 13.50% in parts of Alabama. What is taxable also changes across borders: many states exempt groceries and prescription medicine, some tax clothing only above a price threshold, and a few tax services that their neighbors leave alone. Sales tax matters fiscally, too: it supplies roughly a third of all state government revenue, second only to the income tax, and states like Florida, Washington, Tennessee and Texas raise more than half of their tax revenue from it.

A Short, Rocky History

Sales taxes helped spark the country itself: Britain's taxes on goods sold to the American colonies — imposed without colonial representation in Parliament — fed the resentment that produced the Boston Tea Party and, eventually, the Revolution. Broad-based state sales taxes, though, are a Depression-era invention. When income and property tax receipts collapsed after 1929, states needed a levy that followed everyday spending; Mississippi adopted the first modern general sales tax in 1930 (effective 1932), and most states followed within the decade. The tax has been a fixture of state finance ever since, and periodic proposals for a federal version have never survived the politics.

Can You Deduct Sales Tax?

Yes — with conditions. On a federal return you must itemize deductions, and you then choose between deducting state and local income taxes or state and local sales taxes, never both (the combined state-and-local deduction is capped at $10,000). Most people pick whichever is larger, usually income tax. The sales tax route wins mainly in no-income-tax states, or in a year with a big purchase — a car, a boat, an engagement ring, major appliances. You can use your actual receipts, which takes record-keeping, or the IRS's optional tables based on income and state, plus the tax on specified big-ticket items. In practice only a small minority of filers claim it.

Sales Tax vs. VAT

Both are consumption taxes and both are ultimately paid by the consumer; they differ in mechanics. A sales tax is collected once, at retail, on the full price. A VAT is collected at every stage — manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer — with each business charging VAT on its sale price and reclaiming the VAT it paid on inputs, so the government receives the tax in installments that sum to the same amount. VAT's paper trail makes evasion harder and lets it raise more revenue at a given rate, at the cost of heavier bookkeeping for every business in the chain. If you need VAT math instead, the same three-way solving applies: net, rate and gross.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the pre-tax price from a total?

Divide the total by (1 + rate): $106.50 ÷ 1.065 = $100.00 at a 6.5% rate. Subtracting 6.5% of the total would give $99.58 — close, but wrong, because the percentage applies to the smaller pre-tax amount.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide tax. Alaska municipalities can still levy up to 7% locally.

Why is my receipt's rate higher than my state's rate?

Local taxes. County, city and district levies are added to the state base rate, and the register charges the combined rate for that exact location.

Is sales tax the same as VAT?

No. Sales tax hits once, at the final retail sale; VAT is collected stage by stage with input credits. The consumer funds both.
